Vrijdag is het een jaar geleden dat Rusland Oekraïne binnenviel. Biden bezocht de afgelopen dagen Oekraïne en Polen en wilde met dat bezoek de steun aan Oekraïne benadrukken. Zijn toespraak was tevens het antwoord op de speech van Poetin die uren ervoor heeft plaatsgevonden. Wat heeft Biden gezegd? En wat heeft de Poolse president Duda gezegd? Waarom noem ik beide toespraken misselijkmakend?
Het circus vond plaats bij het koninklijk paleis in Warschau in de koninklijke tuin die met Poolse, Amerikaanse en Oekraïense vlaggen versierd werd. Het kasteel werd bespiegeld met blauw en geel licht.
Het evenement begon wat later omdat Biden tot het einde van de Poetin zijn toespraak wilde wachten die op dezelfde avond plaatsvond. Tijdens deze gebeurtenis was onder andere de partijleider van Recht en Rechtvaardigheid Jarosław Kaczyński, de Poolse minister-president Morawiecki en nog een aantal hoge piefen aanwezig. Het publiek bestond uit door de mainstream media gebrainwashede menigte die keurig vlaggetjes vasthield. De meerderheid hield het liefst drie vlaggetjes vast: de Amerikaanse, de Poolse en uiteraard de Oekraïense. Nah, wist je het nog niet? Deze drie landen zijn BFFs. Sommige hielden maar een vlag en andere fanatiekelingen hadden de Oekraïense vlag op hun schouders.
Uiteindelijk werd de Poolse president aangekondigd: ‘Ladies and gentlemen please welcome the president of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda’. Hij werd voorzichtig enthousiast ontvangen.

Dames en heren,
Hartelijk dank voor uw welkom en ik begroet u ook hartelijk. En ik ben heel blij dat we elkaar in deze uitzonderlijke omstandigheden en op deze uitzonderlijke plek konden ontmoeten. In de uitzonderlijke omstandigheden, omdat in verband met het bezoek aan Polen van de president van de Verenigde Staten van Amerika, de heer Joe Biden, die rechtstreeks vanuit Kiev naar ons toe kwam, dat, zoals heel Oekraïne, vandaag heldhaftig wordt verdedigd door onze Oekraïense buren, verdedigers van hun vaderland.
We ontmoeten elkaar op een unieke plek, in Warschau, de hoofdstad van Polen, bij het koninklijk kasteel, dat een symbool is van pracht van Polen in de 17e en 18e eeuw. In het kasteel waar de Poolse Sejm vergaderde. In het kasteel waar de Poolse grondwet op 3 mei 1791 werd aangenomen, de eerste in Europa en de tweede na de Amerikaanse grondwet, die een baanbrekende bijdrage leverde aan de ontwikkeling van de vrije wereld van de hedendaagse beschaving. Het symbool van Polen, dat tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog voor de ogen van de hele wereld werd vernietigd, verbrand en vervolgens in puin lag. Hier stierven opstandelingen van Warschau, vechtend tegen de gehate bezetter.
En na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, toen we ons in de Sovjet-invloedssfeer bevonden, werd het kasteel herbouwd met de inspanningen van de hele natie gedurende tientallen jaren. Zodat het weer kon staan en daardoor een symbool kon worden van het herboren Polen. Ik zeg dit omdat we vandaag naar een brandend Oekraïne kijken. We kijken naar brandende steden. We horen verschrikkelijk nieuws over Russische terreur. We zien dode mensen, vermoorde mensen. We zien gesloopte woonwijken, beelden alsof ze uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog komen. Iets dat in Europa nooit meer zou gebeuren. Vandaag de dag is het het vreselijke lot van onze buren. Omdat Rusland weer een imperium wil worden en realiseert zijn ambities om andere naties tot slaaf te maken. Wij gaan hier niet mee akkoord. De vrije wereld is het daar niet mee eens.
De president van de Verenigde Staten, de leider van de vrije wereld, Joe Biden, maakte gisteren een spectaculair gebaar. Gisterochtend stond hij tegen alle verwachtingen in Kiev. Op Oekraïens grondgebied, waar oorlog gaande is. Hij liet zien dat de vrije wereld en haar leider nergens bang voor zijn. Hij liet zien dat Oekraïne niet alleen is, dat het de steun heeft van het machtigste land ter wereld en het machtigste leger ter wereld, dat het de steun heeft van de Noord-Atlantische Alliantie en dat dit serieuze steun is die niet zal afnemen. Het is een geweldig teken. We zijn altijd samen met Oekraïne. Vanaf het begin.
Op 23 februari, een dag voor de Russische agressie tegen Oekraïne, een jaar geleden was ik in Kiev samen met de president van ons buurland Litouwen Gitanas Nausėda. We spraken met president Zelensky. Volodimir vertelde ons dat ze zichzelf zouden verdedigen. Poetin denkt dat we ons onmiddellijk zullen overgeven, dat hij Oekraïne zal overnemen, dat hij ons land zal bezetten, dat hij ons land zal inlijven. We zullen vechten tot de dood, tot we vallen. We zullen niet opgeven. Letterlijk binnen een paar uur vielen Russische raketten op Oekraïne. De Russische grootschalige invasie is begonnen.
Iedereen dacht dat Oekraïne in 3 dagen, in 72 uur zijn wapens zou neerleggen. Oekraïne vecht nog steeds. Dankzij de heldhaftigheid van de verdedigers van Oekraïne, dankzij de heldhaftigheid van de Russische soldaten*, en ook dankzij de steun, aangeboden door de vrije wereld aan Oekraïne. Zodat imperiale ambities om andere volkeren tot slaaf te maken gestraft worden en nooit meer zullen terugkeren. En daarom zeggen we vandaag allemaal: Oekraïne moet winnen. Daarom steunen wij Oekraïne. Bedankt Verenigde Staten. Dank aan alle NAVO-landen die hulp sturen naar Oekraïne. Niet alleen de humanitaire, maar ook de militaire hulp. Het is buitengewoon belangrijk. Maar ik dank ook de Verenigde Staten en onze bondgenoten voor het versterken van onze veiligheid aan de oostflank van de NAVO. Zodat niemand er zelfs maar aan zou denken om ons land aan te vallen. Dat we dankzij de aanwezigheid van het Amerikaanse leger en de aanwezigheid van de geallieerde legers, dankzij het verstandige beleid om het Poolse leger de afgelopen jaren te versterken, steeds veiliger zijn. We hebben steeds meer vertrouwen in onze veiligheid. En we maken potentiële aanvallers steeds minder zeker van zichzelf.
*dit is een fout van de president van Polen. Het had ‘Oekraïense soldaten’ moeten zijn. Dit foutje werd uitgebreid besproken op de sociale media:

Het is deze impuls van menselijke solidariteit die mijn landgenoten er vandaag toe brengt hun buren uit Oekraïne te helpen. Nogmaals bedankt voor het openen van uw huizen voor mensen in nood. Dat de vluchtelingen zich thuis voelen want dat zeggen ze.

Dat ze ons dankbaar zijn dat we ze hebben kunnen accepteren, ook al kwamen er miljoenen naar ons toe. (…) Dit is de solidariteit van de wereld van vandaag. Solidariteit met Oekraïne. Ik roep alle leiders van de Europese en Noord-Atlantische Alliantie op om solidariteit met Oekraïne te tonen. Om Oekraïne de hele tijd te steunen. Om militaire steun te sturen naar Oekraïne zodat de verdedigers van Oekraïne iets hebben om mee te vechten. Aarzel niet. Wees niet bang. Er is geen ruimte meer voor ‘business as usual’ met Rusland. Waar bloed wordt vergoten, doet een eerlijk man geen zaken. Daar moet het koste wat het kost gestopt worden. Tegenwoordig kan het alleen worden gestopt met moderne bewapening, want Oekraïne heeft het nodig.

Ik dank de president Joe Biden voor zijn buitengewone moed, voor zijn vastberadenheid. Bedankt aan het Amerikaanse volk, bedankt aan de Amerikaanse autoriteiten, aan het Congres voor alle donaties aan Oekraïne. Met grote steun voor Oekraïne. Voor het feit dat Oekraïne vecht dankzij deze grote militaire hulp van de Verenigde Staten. En anderen steunen ook. Want dat is de rol van de NAVO. De vrije wereld verdedigen en steunen. We zullen solidair zijn met Oekraïne. Zonder solidariteit is er geen vrijheid.
Lang leve het vrije Oekraïne! Lang leve de alliantie van Polen met de Verenigde Staten. Lang leve de NAVO. Lang leve de vrije wereld. Lang leve Polen. Zonder solidariteit is er geen vrijheid.

Hello Poland,
You are great allies Mr. president Duda, Mr. Prime Minister, Mr. mayor and all the former ministers and presidents as well as mayors and Polish political leaders from all across the country thank you for welcoming me back to Poland. It’s nearly one year ago that I spoke by the Royal Castle here in Warsaw just weeks after Vladimir Putin had unleashed his murderous assault on Ukraine the largest land war in Europe since World War Two had begun. And the principles that have been the cornerstone of peace prosperity and stability on this planet for more than 75 years were at risk of being shattered.
One year ago the world was bracing for the fall of Kiev. Well, I guess come from a visit that Kiev and I can report: Kiev stands strong, Kiev stands proud, Kiev stands tall and most important it stands free. When Russia invaded it wasn’t just Ukraine being tested the whole world faced the test of ages. Europe was being tested. America was being tested, NATO is being tested. All democracies are being tested.
The questions we face were as simple as they were profound: would you respond or would we look the other way? Would you be strong? Would you be weak? Would you be our allies? Would we be united or divided? One year later we know the answer. We did respond. We would be strong. We would be united. And the world would not look the other way.

We also face fundamental questions about the commitment the most basic principles would we stand up for the sovereignty of nations. Will we stand up for the right of people to live free from naked aggression? We stand up for democracy. One year later we know the answer is yes. We would stand up for sovereignty. And we did, yes. President Putin ordered his tanks to roll into Ukraine. He thought we would roll over. He was wrong. The Ukrainian people are too brave. America, Europe a coalition of nations for the Atlantic to the Pacific were too unified. Democracy was too strong. Instead of an easy victory he perceived and predicted, Putin left with burnout tanks and Russian forces and delay and just in disarray. He thought he would get the finalisation of NATO instead he got the data naturalisation of Finland and Sweden. He thought NATO would fracture and divide. Instead, NATO was more united and more unified than ever than ever before. He thought he could weaponise energy crack your resolve Europe resolve instead we’re working together to end Europe’s dependence on Russell Russian fossil fuels. He thought autocrats like himself were tough and leaders of democracy were soft and then he met the iron will of America and the nations everywhere that refused to accept the world governed by fear and force. He found himself at war with a nation led by a man whose courage would be forged in fire and steel president Zelensky. President Putin is confronted with something today that he didn’t think was possible a year ago. The democracy of the world has grown stronger not weaker but the autocrats of the world have gone weaker not stronger because of the moments of great upheaval and uncertainty that knowing what you stand for is most important and knowing who stands with you makes all the difference.
The people of Poland know better than anyone what solidarity means. Partition and oppression when the beautiful city was destroyed after the Warsaw Uprising. During decades under the iron fist of communist rule, Poland endured because you stood together. That’s how brave leaders of the opposition and the people of Belarus continue to fight for their democracy. (…)
One year and one year into this war Putin no longer doubts the strength of our coalition but he still doubts our conviction. He doubts our staying power he doubts our continued support for Ukraine. He doubts whether NATO can remain unified. But there should be no doubt our support for Ukraine will not waver NATO will not be divided, and we will not tire.
President Putin’s lust for land and power will fail and Ukrainian people’s love for their country will prevail. Democracies of the world will stand guard over freedom today tomorrow and forever. So that’s what at stake here: freedom. That’s the message I carried yesterday directly to the people of Ukraine when president Zelensky said he came to the United States in December quote he said: ‘this struggle will define the world and what our children and grandchildren how they live and then their children and grandchildren. He wasn’t only speaking about the children and grandchildren of Ukraine. He was speaking about all of our children and grandchildren yours and mine. We’re seeing again today with the people of Poland the people across Europe saw for decades appetites of the autocrat cannot be appeased. They must be opposed. Autocrats only understand one word no. No, no! No you will not take my country. No you will not take my freedom. No you will not take my future.
And I’ll repeat tonight what I said last year in the same place. A dictator better rebuilding an empire will never be able to ease the people’s love of liberty. Brutality will never grind down the will of the free Ukraine. Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia. Never.
For free people refuse to live in a world of hopelessness and darkness you know this has been an extraordinary year and every sense. Extraordinary brutality of Russian forces and mercenaries. They’ve committed crimes against humanity without shame or compunction. From Kherson to Kiev Ukrainian fighters have reclaimed their land or the 50% of the territory Russia held last year the blue and the yellow flag of Ukraine proudly waves once again President Zelensky still leads the democratic elected government that represents the will of the Ukrainian people the world has already voted multiple times including the United Nations General Assembly to condemn Russians aggression and supported just peace. Each time in the UN that vote has been overwhelming. In October 143 nations the United Nations condemn Russia’s illegal annexation only four from the the entire UN voted with Russia. Four.
So tonight, I speak once more to the people of Russia. United States and the nations of Europe do not seek to control or destroy Russia. The West was not plotting to attack Russia as Putin said today and millions of Russian citizens all want to leave in peace, are not the enemy. This war is never a necessity it’s a tragedy. President Putin chose this war. Every day the war continues is his choice he could end the war with a word. It’s simple. If Russia stopped invading Ukraine it would end the war. Ukraine stopped defending itself against Russia would be the end of Ukraine. That’s why together we’re making sure Ukraine can defend itself. The United States has assembled a world worldwide coalition more than fifty nations to get critical weapons and supplies to the brave Ukrainian fighters in the front lines: air defence systems, artillery, ammunition, tanks, armoured vehicles.
The European Union and its member states have stepped up with unprecedented commitment to Ukraine not just in security assistance, also with economic and humanitarian refugee assistance and so much more. All of you here tonight take a moment and I’m serious when I say this turn on look turn around and look at one another look at what you’ve done so far following is hosting more than 1.5 million refugees from this war God bless you.

The world is also coming together to address the global fallout from President Putin’s war. Putin tried to starve the world by blocking the port of Black Sea to stop Ukraine from exporting its grain. Exacerbating the global food crisis that hit developing nations in Africa especially hard. Instead, The United States and the G7 partners around the world answered the call with historic commitments to address the crisis to bolster global food supply. This week my wife Jill Biden is traveling to Africa to help bring attention to this critical issue.
Our commitment is to the people of Ukraine and the future of Ukraine. Ukraine is free, sovereign and democratic. Thousands dream of those who declared Ukraine’s independence more than 30 years ago who led the orange revolution the revolution of dignity who braved ice and fire in the Majdan. (…)
It’s a dream for those Ukrainian patriots who have fought for years against Russia’s aggressions in the Donbass. And heroes who have given everything, given their lives, their service to the beloved Ukraine. I was honoured to visit the memorial in Kiev yesterday to pay tribute to those who lost their lives standing alongside president Zelensky. United States and our partners stand with Ukraine’s teachers and hospitals’ staff, and emergency responders, the workers and cities across Ukraine who are fighting to keep the power on, in the face of Russia’s cruel bombardment. We stand with millions of refugees of this war who found a welcome in Europe and the United States particularly here in Poland.
Ordinary people all across Europe did whatever they could to help and continue to do so. Polish businesses civil society cultural leaders including the first lady of Poland who was here tonight, have led with the heart and determination showcasing all this good about the human spirit. Madam first lady we love you thank you all. I’ll never forget last year visiting with refugees from Ukraine who had just arrived in Warsaw seeing their faces exhausted and afraid holding their children so close where they may never see their fathers, their husbands, their brothers or sisters again. Darkest moments in lives. You, the people of Poland offered them safety and light, you embraced them you literally, embraced them. I watched. I watched the looks on their faces. Meanwhile together we made sure that Russia is paying the price for its abuses.
We continue to maintain the largest sanction regime ever imposed in any country in history and we’re going to announce more sanctions this week. Together with our partners we will hold accountable those who are responsible for this war, and we’ll seek justice for the war crimes and crimes against humanity continuing to be committed by the Russians.
You know there is much for us to be proud of what we have achieved together this past year but we have to be honest and clear eyed as we look at the year ahead. The defence of freedom is not the work of a day or of a year. It’s always difficult. It’s always important as Ukraine continues to defend itself against the Russian onslaught and launch counter offensives of its own there will continue to be hard and very bitter days victories and tragedies but Ukraine is still for the fight ahead.
The United States together with our allies and partners are going to continue to have Ukraine back as it defends itself. Next year I will host every member of NATO for our 2024 summit in the United States together we’ll celebrate the 75th anniversary of the strongest defensive alliance in the history of the world NATO.

The work in front of us is not just about what we’re against but what we’re for. It’s about what kind of world do we want to build. We need to take the strength and capacity of this coalition and apply it to lifting up. Lifting up the lives of people everywhere improving health, growing prosperity, preserving the planet, building peace and security, treating everyone with dignity and respect. That’s our responsibility. The democracy of the world have to deliver it for our people. As we gather tonight the world in my view as a reflection point. The decisions we make over the next five years or so are going to determine and shape our lives for decades to come. That’s true for Americans. That’s true for the people of the world. And while decisions are ours to make now the principles and the stakes are eternal. The choice between chaos and stability, between building and destroying, between hope and fear, between democracy that lifts up the human spirit and the brutal hand of the dictator who crushes it, between nothing less than limitation and possibilities. The kind of possibilities that come when people who live not in captivity but in freedom.
Freedom. Freedom there is no sweeter word than freedom. There is no nobler goal than freedom. There’s no higher aspiration than freedom. Americans know that and you know it. And all that we do now must be done so our children and grandchildren will know it as well: freedom. The enemy of the tyrant and the hope of the brave and the truth of the ages freedom. Stand with us we will stand with you. Let us move forward with faith and conviction on their binding commitment to be allies not of darkness but of light. Not of oppression but of liberation. Not of captivity but yes of freedom and God bless you all.
